Hatta’s Crossroad, Safe for the Community or Not?
In this era, roads are one of the most important
structures in the world. People need to go to places as fast as they can, but
without forgetting their own safety. What if there are no roads in the world?
Would we go on with our lives as usual? It would be great if we could fly all
over the world by ourselves, but we couldn’t, right? We all know what the
answer is.
The problem is, there are roads everywhere, but not many
people are aware of its safety. This safety is very important. Unsafe roads
have donated many victims, both victims of minor injuries or casualties and
victims of serious injuries and even death, where most of whom are still in the
productive age. Sometimes roads can very dangerous, even more so than age,
because it can take your life faster.
Leaving that aside, roads have many facilities that must
be well-combined with each other so that they can help people to keep their
lives. Despite that, we still find poor combining of the facilities everywhere.
So, let’s discuss if the crossroad on Soekarno Hatta’s street in Malang City is
safe or not.
Before we discuss about the problem that occured on
Soekarno Hatta’s crossroad, we need to know why the crossroad is very
important. On one side of the crossroad is the Soekarno Hatta bridge. The
bridge connects the south side of the city over the river Brantas. The area
contained several universities such as Brawijaya University, UIN Malang, State
University of Malang, and so on, with the north side of the region of Soekarno
Hatta’s street itself, where there are also plenty of places to stay for the
students. In addition, according to the Regional Regulation No. 4 Malang 2011,
the status of the Soekarno Hatta road is a 'provincial road' along the Ahmad
Yani’s street, Borobudur’s street, MT. Haryono’s street and Tlogomas’s street.
So it makes the Soekarno Hatta crossroad crowded every day.
Now the condition is that the crossroad is not safe.
There are two main cause that triggered this problem. The first is the poor
quality of the facility, and the second is the people themselves.
One reason is the public facilities. Indeed, the existing
pavement on the road around this crossroad has been using asphalt as its
material, but it's not equipped with barrier markers to make room for other
road users, especially for crossing pedestrians. This eventually led to a lot
of vehicles stopping ahead of red light and not giving space for pedestrians.
It looks like a trivial thing, but it becomes a dangerous thing because if
there's one person who violates the rules, they can harm themselves, or even
harm another person.
Other facilities that are also dangerous around this
crossroad is the Soekarno Hatta bridge's east side. The bridge that has been
built since 1988 hasn't been quite feasible to be used again and needs some
renovation. Moreover, the presence of traffic signs which are directly related
to the crossroad, results in vehicles heading south stopping at the top of the
bridge when the lights on the traffic light is red. This condition is not in
accordance with the rules of public works minister of the Republic of
Indonesia, which explains that at the time of the operation of the road,
vehicles are prohibited from stopping on the bridge. In addition, the bridge is
also still using steel ropes, but in terms of aesthetics, steel rope bridges in
the urban area can reduce the beauty of the scenery for the community.
The next major issue that caused the insecurity of the
area around the crossroad Soekarno Hatta is the unawareness of the importance
of the safety of road users. Every morning, afternoon, and night, we often
found that drivers on the side of the crossroad is still running the vehicle on
track despite the fact that the traffic light is still on red. They assume that
they are still able to run the vehicle even though the light is red by getting
way closer to the vehicle in front of them, where the vehicles located in front
are already running when the lights at traffic lights is still showing green
color. This might be just a little problem when it's only done by one person,
but in reality, this kind of offense is always done by more than one person. As
a result, the vehicle from the other side of the crossroad had to wait for a
vehicle in violation even though the lights on the track has been changed to
green.
Automatically, these circumstances cause congestion on
this road. There have even been a few times where these violations result in
accidents due to the ignorance of the drivers who are driving at high speed.
The government has actually provided a solution to the
two main problems, namely by means of deploying the authorities to regulate the
traffic conditions at the Soekarno Hatta crossroad, but it was not enough to
provide a deterrent to the motorists. This is proven by the presence of riders
who often abuse what have been discussed above.
In conclusion, the recent condition of Soekarno Hatta’s
street is not safe. Then for suggestion, it is not only that the government
should deploy police officers to deal with this issue in place, but they should
also do a socialization where they
briefed the citizens on the importance of safety in a variety of existing
facilities in the city of Malang, in the means of education and also in the
terminal. So that the apparatus takes action not only for a short period of
time, but also eradicate the roots of the problem.
